“Warning: Your Cell Phone May Be Hazardous to your Health” by investigative journalists Chris Ketcham in the Feb 2010 issue of GQ magazine

Ladies and Gentlemen, you may never have wanted to learn about electromagnetic fields but the time has come for everyone to learn about their hazards.

Big brother doesn’t care about your brain cells or how you’re feeling or whether you die early. That’s the message we get loud and clear from GQ’s new investigative piece on cell phone radiation, “Warning: Your Cell Phone May Be Hazardous to your Health”, by investigative journalist Chris Ketcham (www.christopherketcham.com).

Ketcham has been researching the health hazards of microwave radiation for over a year. Research support for his GQ article was provided by The Investigative Fund at the Nation Institute, which identifies and supports compelling or courageous progressive voices.

And compelling Ketcham’s article is. Starting with a description of how the early research of neuroscientist Allan Frey, published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, showing ’grave nonthermal effects from microwave radiation’, was deep-sixed by our Pentagon thirty-five years ago. Frey was evidently told to conceal his findings about the impact of microwave radiation on the blood brain barrier or his previously abundant funding from the Office of Naval Research would end.

Then we learn about the travails of biophysicist Henry Lai, PhD of the University of Washington. Lai took the science beyond the blood brain barrier to also find impact on DNA in rats. Lai found that in a brief 2-hour period, damage to DNA occurred from electromagnetic radiation that “could then lead to genetic damage and mutations that would be passed on for generations.” Industry attempted to discredit Lai.

The story of industry and government squashing research showing harm from electromagnetic fields, and attempting to discredit the researchers themselves, goes on, and it is good reading.

I hope after you read Ketcham’s GQ article, “Warning: Your Cell Phone May Be Hazardous to Your Health”, you will ponder the question Ketcham raised after learning all the dark history on this subject. The pressing question, he says, is “The evidence is starting to pour in, and it’s not pretty. So why isn’t anyone in America doing anything about it?” Louis Slesin, Editor of Microwave News, told Ketcham, “Much of the comfort in our modern life relies on not caring, on refusing to recognize the dangers of microwave radiation.”

I’ve wondered deeply about the subject of caring, too. In the new sci-fi movie, Avatar, the indigenous people, the Na’vi—humanoids indigenous to the moon—make clear how humans need remedial training in feeling, and in understanding our interconnectedness with the natural world.

Indeed, modern man (and woman) seems to be highly oriented to ego and power and greed, to an ‘achievement mindset’ derived in many cases by a need to feel worthy by winning the approval of others, or the need to be in control. This encourages a mindbody ‘disconnect’, making it difficult to appreciate the body as a living system, or our own exquisite, though fragile, electromagnetic makeup. Its easier in this place to dismiss potential biological effects of artificial electromagnetic fields, arrogantly denying this possibility from a place of ego, and ‘being right’. People are like this all around us and it is astounding.

The result of this state of mind is people can’t truly care for others, the planet or even themselves. Many pretend to care. They put their names on committees and boards of do-good organizations, but how may people do you know who actually allow themselves to care? Who do you know who has an active heart—a heart that is not already frozen?

We know it when someone cares. There is a visceral feeling we get, a comforting depth of connection with them and also a strong attraction. Same goes for nature. When we are alive within ourselves, we feel we are a part of the natural world and we feel a strong attraction to it, a sense of belonging, and we want to spend time there enjoying our connection with the bigger whole. It would be absolutely impossible in this state to support polluting our habitat with disrupting electromagnetic radiation, or any other pollutant for that matter, no matter what the justification. And we wouldn’t sit idly by for decades as scientists are suppressed, and their funding cut, knowing full well the truth of radiation’s harm is not getting out to the people whose health is impacted.

From the sounds of the science on cell phone radiation in the GQ article, we’d better start learning to CARE soon, or many grave consequences to our health and the future of the species may soon be upon us!

Thanks to Chris Ketcham for a job well done and to GQ for taking on this ever so important topic.
